Serafina and the Black Cloak

Serafina Class at Carolina Day School

Working with two teachers at Carolina Day School in Asheville, NC, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a “Serafina Class” for the last four weeks. This was a special, voluntary activity that students could sign up for if they were interested in reading and studying the book. In addition to reading Serafina and the Black Cloak, we discussed writing techniques, historical fiction, developing characters, establishing conflict-action-resolution, the perceptions of good and evil in society, and many other topics. The classroom activity culminated with a field trip to Biltmore Estate for a special “Serafina Tour”. We went deep into the sub-basement and basement, climbed up into the off-limits organ loft, spied the house’s secret doors, and explored the main rooms of the house—
following Serafina’s footsteps through all the areas described in the book. It was great fun. Thank you to Bryan, Sandy, and Elaine for being part of this. And thank you to all the students for being such enthusiastic participants. Good luck with your writing projects! 🙂
